SGLang — Prefix-Caching and Hybrid Model Specialist
Self-contained guide to SGLang — the local inference engine.
- What it is: Python/CUDA serving framework built on RadixAttention, 36.9k stars, 0.5.21 (2026-10-01), used by NVIDIA, xAI, Oracle, AMD, LinkedIn and Google Cloud (sglang.io).
- Hardware: NVIDIA (A100 through B300/GB300, select RTX 30+, DGX Spark), AMD (MI355/MI300), Intel Xeon CPU, TPU, Ascend NPU, XPU, and MLX/MPS for Apple Silicon — the widest hardware list of any batched engine.
- 2026 highlights: on-the-fly prefill↔decode role switching for PD instances without restart (#28403); prefix cache moved to a Rust core by default (#39627); unified radix tree with sliding-window branching-point caching (#34565, #37381); GLM-5.3-Flash on MI355X with FP8/MXFP4 MoE and MTP; day-0 Kimi K3 and GLM5.2 NVFP4 support; full SGLang features on TPU via RadixArk.
- Known trap: on hybrid models SGLang caps
max_running_requeststo fit its mamba state cache and says so only in a startup log line ("max_running_requests is capped to 12 by the mamba state cache"). Raising--max-mamba-cache-sizeand--mem-fraction-static 0.9doubled throughput from 3,833 → 7,883 tok/s at 192 concurrent requests (HelixML, via winder.ai). - Best for: shared-prefix/agent workloads, hybrid models, and datacenter-scale throughput. Strongest where requests share long system prompts.
Quickstart
Assembled from the verified facts on this page and its Sources list. Versions are the ones recorded in research on 2026-10-09.
Install
pip install 'sglang[all]==0.5.21'
Run
# OpenAI-compatible server plus native /generate
python -m sglang.launch_server \
--model-path Qwen/Qwen3-8B \
--port 30000
Verify
curl http://localhost:30000/v1/models
Expected output: Radix-tree prefix caching is the differentiator; SGLang measured 81 / 627 / 1,725 tok/s at 1 / 10 / 50 concurrent on one H100 — the best of the five engines tested.
Pitfalls: A mamba state cache silently capped concurrency (3,833 -> 7,883 tok/s after the fix). If throughput plateaus for no visible reason, suspect state-cache sizing before blaming the GPU.
