GPT4All — Effectively End-of-Life

Self-contained guide to GPT4All — the local inference engine.

  • Last commit 2025-05-27; no release since February 2025. Despite 77k stars it is dormant, and a maintainer reportedly confirmed end-of-life in GitHub discussion. It still installs and runs GGUF on CPU with no GPU, which is its only remaining value (markaicode, maketocreate).
  • Recommendation: do not build on it. Use Ollama (GPU-less CPU simplicity) or Jan (offline desktop app) instead.

Quickstart

Assembled from the verified facts on this page and its Sources list. Versions are the ones recorded in research on 2026-10-09.

Install

pip install gpt4all # DO NOT — see the pitfall below

Run

# (no supported path)

Verify

Verify the repo's last commit date before building anything on this.

Expected output: Last commit 2025-05-27, 77,373 stars — effectively end-of-life.

Pitfalls: Do not build on GPT4All. It is CPU-only and unmaintained. For a CPU-only legacy box use Ollama or Jan instead.
